One-Eighty: the start of my journey into working with Mental Health

As part of my Second year as a Social Work student I was very much looking forward to beginning my first placement. When I heard the news I would have the opportunity to do this with One-Eighty I was excited to be finally getting started and putting things into practice. The induction week was a good way to get to know the team and they were all really warm and welcoming.

 

One-Eighty have given me the opportunity to work with young people on one to one interventions and have encouraged me along the way to improve skills and knowledge and support me in my journey to become a social worker. The approach used in sessions with young people has allowed me to be more creative and adopt ideas I have never tried before. I have also found the training sessions interesting and informative such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and learning about therapeutic tools like the Six Part Story method.

 

The most rewarding part of being at One-Eighty, although challenging at times, has been meeting and working alongside the young people themselves, each with their own individual challenges and battles. They have all shown their own unique strengths and abilities and I believe the techniques used by One-Eighty help to develop skills to use in all areas of their life. I feel it has been an incredibly valuable experience – one I was not expecting to have!

 

My ambition for the future is to work as a mental health Social Worker and the experience of supporting young people on developing positive thinking patterns and behaviours will give me valuable skills to use in future. Mental Health can be a challenging area to work in and yet it is quite universal; it effects so many different people at varying points in their life. With the stigma attached it can also make it harder for people to seek support. I hope to learn as much as I can whilst on placement to be able to provide support to those that are vulnerable and promote positive well-being.
