Let Toys Be Toys For Girls And Boys
Why should anything be labelled as for girls or for boys? Why is there still so much inequality? It frustrates me when anything is labelled “for boys” or “for girls”. Who gets to decide that and why? It happened so much in the media, in sports, even the Church of England with the woman bishops debate, can’t they just be bishops?
I think that children should be allowed to make complete free choice but this unfortunately needs a lot of work and updating. The ‘let toys be toys’ campaign is a parent led group born out of frustration at gender-based marketing. No child should be forced into an old-fashioned outdated stereotype. One-Eighty is passionate to see young people reach their potential and recognises that each individual is unique in character. Children and young people should not be persuaded what they should and should not like based on their gender but should be encouraged to develop their own personality and individualism.
‘Let Toys Be Toys is asking retailers to stop limiting children’s interests by promoting some toys as only suitable for girls, and others only for boys.’
The group have partitioned to retailers to take down ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ signs in stores and have had some success but there still is a way to go. No child should be told what they should or should not believe, be, play with based on their gender. It is time to stop the sexism once and for all and this starts with encouraging our youngest generation.
