Who remembers… exploring the Secret Garden with Mary?

Walking through the wardrobe into Narnia or

Practising magic tricks with Harry?

Reading is still a popular pastime but in an age of screens it is facing fierce competition.

As millions of UK children return to school after lockdown, there is a sense of a fresh start in the air - the beginning of a whole new chapter. Throughout the month of September, One-Eighty will be celebrating books. After all, it’s also International Literacy Day on the 8th, Roald Dahl Day on the 13th and Read and E-book day on the 19th.

Reading is good for our health – studies show it can increase our emotional intelligence as we explore different characters, personalities and motivations. As BBC Teach explains, when we read, ‘we create mental simulations of the activities, sights and sounds of scenes in a story, blending these with our own memories and experiences, all of which stimulates the neural pathway.’

Reading keeps the brain active!

But more than that, it can help our wellbeing. Reading for pleasure can improve confidence, self-esteem, reduce feelings of loneliness and can also aid sleep.

So check out our social media channels for book ideas to inspire young minds.

From books we have enjoyed from our childhood, to those we have used with young people, we aim to give you suggestions to help your young people #readanewbook during September 2020

If you enjoy our suggestions and would like to say #thankyou, please consider a small donation towards the purchase of new book resources for our young people. You can donate here
